The Layering Guide: How to Dress for Unpredictable Weather

Blog pd

f there’s one rule of country dressing, it’s this: never trust the forecast. A morning that starts crisp and grey can turn golden by lunchtime, and a blue sky can cloud over before you’ve reached the end of the lane. The secret to staying comfortable from a chilly morning to a warm afternoon isn’t packing for every eventuality. It’s layering well.

“There’s no such thing as bad weather, only unsuitable clothing.” (Alfred Wainwright)

Wainwright had it right. Get your layers sorted and the sky can do whatever it likes.

Start with a Breathable Base

Everything begins next to the skin. A soft cotton tee or a lightweight brushed-cotton shirt keeps you comfortable whether you’re striding up a hill or lingering over coffee in the village. The base layer’s job is simple: manage moisture and feel good all day.

Avoid anything too heavy here. If your base layer is doing the work of a jumper, you’ve lost the flexibility that makes layering worthwhile.

Add a Mid Layer for Warmth

This is where the real insulation happens. A cable knit jumper or a fleece gilet traps heat close to the body without restricting movement, ideal for everything from dog walks to farmers’ markets.

The gilet deserves a special mention. By keeping your core warm while leaving your arms free, it’s arguably the most versatile piece in any country wardrobe. Wear it over a shirt on mild days or under a jacket when the temperature really drops.

Finish with a Weatherproof Outer

Your outer layer is your armour against whatever rolls in off the horizon. A wax jacket or quilted coat shrugs off drizzle and wind, and, crucially, can be shrugged off itself the moment the sun appears.

Look for practical details:

  • A corduroy or moleskin collar that’s kind on the neck
  • Deep bellows pockets for gloves, leads, and treats
  • A two-way zip so you can sit, stride, or climb a stile in comfort
  • Storm cuffs to keep the wind out

The Beauty of Flexibility

The real magic of layering is that each piece works alone or together, so you’re never caught out. Peel off, add on, adapt as the day unfolds.

Invest in quality staples in complementary colours, and every combination will look intentional rather than improvised.

Stick to a palette of three or four tones (olive, navy, oat, and rust are a classic country quartet) and you can pull any three pieces from the wardrobe half-asleep and still look put together.

Our Favourite Trio This Season

  1. A printed cotton tee: soft, breathable, and a little personality peeking through at the collar
  2. A fleece gilet: warmth without bulk, freedom without chill
  3. A wax field jacket: practical, timeless, and only improved by a few years of weather

Three pieces, seven combinations, zero excuses to stay indoors.

Practical, timeless, and ready for anything the sky decides to do.
