Checked luggage is a tax on optimism: you pay for it, wait for it, and use half of what’s inside. The one-bag approach flips the problem. Instead of packing for every possibility, you pack a small system where everything works with everything else, and a week of outfits fits under the seat in front of you.
Pack for the trip you’re taking, not the person you might become on it.
The Capsule Formula
For a seven-day trip in mild weather, this covers work, dinners, and walking days:
- Five tops: three tees, one shirt or blouse, one fine knit
- Two bottoms: one pair of dark jeans or trousers, one lighter or smarter alternative
- One layer: an unstructured blazer, overshirt, or cardigan (worn on the plane, not packed)
- Two pairs of shoes maximum: the comfortable pair on your feet, the smarter pair in the bag
- Underwear and socks for the week, plus one swim or gym set if the trip calls for it
The maths works because of colour discipline. Keep everything inside one tight palette and five tops times two bottoms already gives you ten outfits before the layer gets involved.
Fabric Choices Do the Heavy Lifting
One-bag packing is really a fabric decision:
- Merino and knits shrug off creases and can be worn multiple times between washes
- Crease-prone cottons and linens are beautiful at home and punishing out of a bag; take one at most
- Quick-dry underwear and socks mean a hotel-sink wash can stretch any trip indefinitely
Packing Mechanics
- Roll soft items, fold structured ones, and let packing cubes keep categories findable
- Wear the bulk: heaviest shoes and thickest layer travel on your body
- Shoes at the base, stuffed with socks and chargers, soles facing the bag’s edges
- Leave ten percent empty. Bags that close easily on day one still close on day seven
Nobody at your destination knows you wore that jumper twice. That’s the entire secret.
The first one-bag trip feels like a dare. By the second, watching the baggage carousel from the taxi rank feels like getting away with something.
