A good wax jacket is an investment that should last decades, but only if you look after it. The good news is that maintenance is simpler than you might think: an occasional wipe-down, a yearly rewax, and sensible storage will keep it working season after season.
A wax jacket doesn’t wear out. It wears in.
The Golden Rule: Never Machine Wash
This is the one mistake you can’t undo. Detergent strips the wax coating and ruins the weatherproofing, and no amount of reproofing will fully bring it back. The same goes for dry cleaning, soap, solvents, and hot water.
Instead, keep cleaning simple:
- Brush off dried mud and debris with a soft-bristle brush
- Wipe the jacket down with cold water and a sponge
- Pay attention to seams, creases, and under the collar, where dirt hides
- Let it dry naturally, away from radiators and direct sunlight
How to Know When It Needs Rewaxing
Your jacket will tell you. If rain no longer beads on the surface, or the fabric feels dry and pale in high-wear areas like the shoulders and elbows, the wax is running low. As a rule of thumb, reproof once a year, ideally before winter, and more often if the jacket works hard.
Reproofing, Step by Step
- Clean first. Never wax over dirt. Sponge the jacket down with cold water and let it dry completely.
- Warm the wax. Place the tin of wax dressing in a bowl of hot water for around twenty minutes, until it softens.
- Work it in. Apply with a cloth or sponge in small circular motions, paying extra attention to seams, creases, and high-wear areas like elbows and cuffs. Keep the wax off the lining and the corduroy collar.
- Even it out. Finish with a gentle blast of warm air from a hairdryer, held at a distance, to help the wax absorb evenly.
- Let it cure. Hang the jacket overnight in a warm, ventilated spot and give it a full day before wearing, so the wax settles rather than transferring onto everything you brush past.
Reproofing takes an afternoon. A new jacket takes a lot more.
Storing It Well
Store your jacket on a sturdy hanger in a cool, dry, well-ventilated place, never folded in a drawer where creases set and mildew creeps in. Keep it away from direct sunlight and heat sources, which dry the wax out prematurely.
Treat it well and your wax jacket will only get better with every season: softer, more characterful, and moulded to you.
